Carbon monoxide risk from ‘open-flued’ gas space heaters

8 June 2018
Open-flued gas heaters should not be used until they have been serviced by a qualified gasfitter.

Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) previously issued general advice for the public to check whether they had a Vulcan or Pyrox Heritage Gas Space heater. The advice was not to use these heaters due to safety concerns.

The Chief Health Officer has now broadened the safety warning to include all open-flued gas heaters.

Open-flued gas heaters pose a risk of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning under certain conditions such as:

  • inadequate ventilation
  • operating bathroom exhaust fans or kitchen range hoods while using the heater

This risk is increased if the heater and associated components are not serviced regularly. It is recommended that all gas heaters are serviced every two years. Please note: Open-flued gas heaters should not be used until they have been serviced by an qualified gasfitter.
