The Victorian Housing Register (VHR) is now live.
The Victorian Housing Register (the register) sees all new and existing public housing applications form part of the register.
Department of Health and Human Service staff use the Victorian Housing Register to manage and allocate public housing properties to clients.
Referrals to community housing under the referral protocol will also be drawn from the Victorian Housing Register.
What is the Victorian Housing Register?
On 18 September 2015, Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing, Martin Foley announced the creation of a Housing Register to consolidate all social housing applications into a single register.
The register will improve the service provided to clients seeking housing by streamlining access to a broader range of social housing options. There will be a common housing application process and a mechanism for all social housing organisations to access one register to allocate vacant properties.
The register is being designed and implemented in partnership between the community housing sector, the homelessness services sector, including family violence, and the Department of Health and Human Services.
There are two stages to the roll-out of the register:
Stage one: in September 2016, applications on the public housing wait list were migrated across to form the Victorian Housing Register. Applicants can now apply for both public and community housing through the new Victorian Housing Register application. The client application and the support service application are now available (online and paper applications).
Stage two: Commences 2018, when community housing organisations will be provided with the opportunity to become full participants in the register and their waiting lists (up to 15,000 applications) commence merging onto the register. From this point it is envisaged that all social housing organisations participating on the register will allocate vacancies from the register.
