Human Services Standards independent review requirements and COVID-19

15 April 2020
The Department of Health and Human Services (the department) is aware of and acknowledges that a number of independent reviews against the Human Services Standards (Standards) may not be able to be undertaken during the COVID-19 emergency.

The department will not regard deferral of certification processes as a breach of the relevant organisations’ compliance requirements.  While certification against the Standards is granted by independent review bodies and not the department, it is expected that independent review bodies will enact their governing bodies guidance regarding conducting reviews in extraordinary circumstances.

The specifics of each governing bodies' guidance may differ however, the independent review body may apply methodologies for remote auditing and or postponement based on an assessment of risk and practicality of implementation. Both independent review bodies and organisations should contact the Human Services Regulator at if they have any queries in relation to the Human Services Standards review requirements during this period.
