Victoria’s first disability abuse prevention strategy

Victoria has released Dignity, respect and safer services: Victoria’s abuse prevention strategy and the Code of conduct for disability service workers to strengthen safeguards for people with a disability.

The strategy and code of conduct form part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to embed the principle of zero tolerance of abuse into the delivery of disability services.

Zero tolerance of abuse involves a comprehensive approach to abuse prevention and response. It provides a clear message that abuse is never acceptable, frames abuse as a human rights issue and offers a way for organisations to understand how they can prevent abuse.

The strategy provides a framework to enhance safeguards in Victoria during transition to the full rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It details a range of government initiatives to build the capacity of individuals, workers and providers to better understand, respond to and report abuse, now and into the future.

The code of conduct provides a guide to ethical decision-making and outlines general standards of behaviour expected of disability service workers.

The department will work with disability service providers and workers to implement the code of conduct across the disability services sector in the coming months.

The department has also set up a new online information hub to provide easy access to information, toolkits and resources developed under the strategy for individuals, workers and providers along with links to other useful resources.

Combined with other safeguards, the strategy will help better protect the rights of people with a disability.
